It’s Championship Weekend!
I’d be lying if I said the song “Miami” by Will Smith has not been playing in my head the last three days. I may even arrive at the Miami-Dade Airport and sing out loud, “Party in the city where the heat is on, all night on the beach ‘til the break of dawn. Welcome to Miami…Bienvenido a Miami!”
As you can tell by now, I’m a little excited about boarding a plane destined for Homestead-Miami tomorrow! Not only to see who’ll be crowned as a NASCAR champion in each of the top-three national touring series, but also to catch up with old friends!
I’ve worked in the auto racing industry the last few years, and have grown to love this sport and the people involved in it. I don’t necessarily have favorite drivers, but I’ve had the privilege to work alongside some great individuals and am always happy to see them have success in a race or season. One such person is Austin Dillon.
I’m definitely pulling for my friend Austin to win the Truck Series championship. He’s a great kid who I worked with in the beginning of his career while I was employed at his grandfather’s company from 2008-2010. I’m also attending the Camping World Truck Series/Nationwide Series Awards Banquet on the Monday, so it would be special seeing him get recognized as the 2011 champ.
I believe the Nationwide Series championship is locked up already for Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. The way he rebounded from last year is truly remarkable. It speaks to his growing talent and the great people surrounding him.
In regards to who’ll win the Sprint Cup championship, I’m at a loss. Both Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart are deserving of this honor and their race teams have done their jobs this season. Every lap is going to count and we won’t know who the champion will be until the checkered flag waves. You want to see an exciting finish to an already amazing 2011 season? To quote Barney Stinson, “It’s gonna be legend-… wait for it… and I hope you’re not lactose intolerant because the second half of that word is…DAIRY!”
While I’m “working” this weekend, be sure become my friend on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/poconoposseguy) for live updates! I’ll be posting images and messages from the time I leave until the time I return. Some of the images and posts won’t go up on our Pocono Raceway Official Facebook Fan Page, but my FB page will give Pocono Raceway fans a behind-the-scenes look at the festivities at Homestead-Miami Speedway, the awards banquet and everywhere else in between.
Hope you all enjoy the final three races of the season!
