KURT BUSCH CHASING RECORD
Kurt Busch, who won the Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400 at Pocono Raceway in June, is trying to do something that hasn’t been done in NASCAR: run every lap for the most consecutive races to start a season. Busch has completed all 5,673 laps in the first 20 races and according to Dustin Long of NBC Sports, no driver has completed every lap through the first 21 NASCAR Sprint Cup races in a season.
Busch completed every lap at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last weekend and tied Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the record. Earnhardt established the mark in 2012. In his 21st race at Pocono Raceway, Earnhardt Jr. fell 18 laps short in the rain-shortened race.
POKER TOURNAMENT
The Fifth Annual Pocono Raceway Poker tournament, benefitting the NASCAR Foundation and Pennsylvania-based Michael’s Way, will be held at Mohegan Sun Pocono in Wilkes-Barre, Penn., on Thursday, July 28, 2016. This tournament will feature NASCAR drivers and other celebrities for these two great causes. NASCAR Foundation has contributed over $25 million to initiatives that inspire children across the country and Michael’s Way focuses on improving the lives of children with pediatric cancer and the parents under financial strain after diagnosis.
SAFETY ENHANCEMENTS
Pocono Raceway has added Steel And Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) barriers and extended the pit wall in an effort to make the track safer for drivers, teams and fans. The pit wall has been lengthened 100 feet and 6,000 feet of SAFER barrier has been added to the track. An additional 5,100 feet of SAFER barrier is scheduled to be added by 2017 where all outside walls, including straightaways, will be covered. A mild fall and late start to cold weather allowed the project to be completed in its majority and is currently ahead of schedule.
