As a retired Sergeant Major with 34 years of service in the US Army, including deployments to Afghanistan, SGM(R) Bittenbender’s journey has intertwined with the thrill of motorsports and the solemn duty of honoring our fallen heroes. Transitioning from military service to becoming Director of Military Affairs at Pocono Raceway, he has continued his mission to support veterans and their families.
SGM(R) Bittenbender contributed to the pre-race ceremonies for NASCAR and Indy Series at Pocono Raceway alongside Bob Pallo since 2000. Following his retirement from the military and the passing of Pallo, Bittenbender transitioned into the role of Director of Military Affairs for Pocono Raceway.
Bittenbender’s tenure in the US Army spanned 34 years, culminating in the rank of Sergeant Major. Despite health challenges from exposure to burn pits resulting in the amputation of his left leg, his passion for outdoor activities remains unabated. He has embraced adaptive sports, competing at the paralympic level in Skeleton and Bobsled, and participated in marathons nationwide. Alongside personal pursuits, he mentors fellow amputees at Walter Reed Medical Center and relies on his service dog, Kirby, for mobility and PTSD support in the tasks he is trained to perform. Kirby was sponsored by the Houston Texans NFL Team as well as Kroger and was the 2022 Puppy Bowl MVP.
Motivated by childhood memories of NASCAR races with his father, Bittenbender endeavored to recreate those moments of connection for Gold Star Families, honoring their fallen loved ones. With the backing of Pocono Raceway’s leadership, he has established exclusive pre-race experiences for Gold Star Families, fostering camaraderie and cherished memories.
SGM(R) Bittenbender’s journey reflects resilience, service, and a commitment to honoring the sacrifices of our military community while embracing life’s adventures to the fullest.
