We have long said we have the best fans in motorsports at Pocono Raceway. Whether you have been coming to races for years or 2018 was your first time, we want to hear from you! If you would like to be featured, please e-mail Kevin at kteel@poconoraceway.com.
This week we hear from one of our great fans, Matthew Frederick, from Elkridge, MD.
Name: Matthew Frederick
Hometown: Emmaus, PA.
Family, Kids, Pets: 1 cat, wife, 2 kids
Question: What is your funniest story at Pocono Raceway?
Answer: When I took my daughter to her first race and got to watch her enjoy getting her picture taken with Tricky, the face painting in the fan zone, meet and greets in the different displays, the list goes on and on. The entire weekend was spent with a smile on her face. Ultimately, the absolute best part was watching her get excited as 40 cars came off of turn 3 coming to take the green. Watching her scream out of part fear and part joy was a moment I’ll never forget! I knew what was happening and I was most excited for her.
Question: How/when did you get interested in racing?
Answer: I was about 12 years old when my uncle took me to my first drag race at Maple Grove. He would race his 1967 Mustang Fastback and that was the start of my love for motorsports. It then led me to my local dirt tracks at Grandview and Linda’s Speedway. My first Cup race was at Dover and it’s been growing ever since. I go to about 4 or 5 Cup races a year now.
Question: What is some advice you would like to give to possible first time Pocono Raceway fans?
Answer: Pack a cooler and bring the family. The memories made are better than the race itself.
Question: What driver would you like to meet and why?
Answer: There’s too many to pick one. Carl Edwards was my favorite driver so I would say him first. But I think more than anything I’d love to talk to the guys that have been doing it for a long time at a high level of success. Tony Stewart, Richard Petty, Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon, Kyle Busch, the Keselowski family (Bob Keselowski for sure), Junior Johnson, Cale Yarborough, the list could go on forever.
Question: What is one cool fact or talent about yourself you would like to share?
Answer: I’m just a regular guy with a regular job that really loves racing.
