LONG POND, Pa. (July 30, 2016) – William Byron had a record-setting day in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to highlight Saturday’s action at Pocono Raceway.
Piloting the No. 9 Liberty University Toyota, Bryon won the Pocono Mountains 150 and in the process became the first driver to win five series races in his rookie season.
Starting from the pole position, Byron, a rookie from Charlotte, N.C., led 44 of the 60 laps to get to victory circle. Cameron Hayley, in the No. 13 Thor Sport Racing Toyota, finished in second place. Brett Moffit, Timothy Peters and Cole Custer completed the top five for the Pocono Mountains 150.
“I don’t like to get ahead of my goal but achieving the win record for a rookie was definitely a goal,” Byron said. “I love this racetrack. I guess you have to love the racetrack to get the wins. We have worked on the restarts and knew this race would come down to being good on restarts.”
NASCAR SPRINT CUP SERIES FINAL PRACTICE: Coors Light pole sitter Martin Truex Jr. led the Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series final practice. Truex Jr, in the No. 78 Furniture Row Toyota, set the fastest lap at 176.377 mph, followed by Brad Keselowski, who set a lap of 176.136 mph in his No. 2 Team Penske Ford. The top five for the final practice also included Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch and rookie Chase Elliott.
